Schaaf: Worst kept secret

Rode, 23, has been linked with a move to Bayern for some time, and kicker reported on Thursday that the midfielder has now reached an agreement with the European champions.

Frankfurt CEO Heribert Bruchhagen then confirmed the kicker report, telling Frankfurter Rundschau: “That has been clear for nine months now.”

The former Germany under-21 international is the second player to agree to join Bayern on a free transfer in the summer after Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski agreed a five-year contract.

Rode was one of the rising stars of the 2012-13 Bundesliga season, and Frankfurt had attempted to extend his contract early last year.

However, in April 2013, Bruchhagen told ZDF TV that there were had been indications that Rode was to make the switch to Bayern, even if the player insisted at the time that such talk was “pure speculation.”

Rode, who has has struggled to replicate last season’s form, has made 58 top-flight appearances, and 33 in the second tier, since joining Frankfurt for 250,000 euros from Kickers Offenbach in 2010.
